Practice: Spend More Time Moving

Make moving happen often, anywhere

What does it mean to "spend more time moving"?

This practice is about:

  1. Assessing where you currently are. What's your current baseline ("normal") amount of movement every day?

  2. Dialing up a little bit more, gradually. Based on what you did yesterday or last week, what would be just a little bit more movement today?

Practicing consistently every day: assess, adjust, and execute your progressive movement plan. Collaborate with your coach. Work together to set a routine and movement plans that fit in your program.

Why and how to practice

Movement can happen anywhere.

It doesn't need to have a gym, heavy tools, a coach, or a group of team supporters. (Those things are fun too, though).

If you're determined to move and creative to execute, you have everything you need for a sustainable movement plan.

In this movement plan, there's one singular measure of success and progress: more time moving, less time sedentary.

To make it sustainable, make it purposeful.

Find ways to add movement that moves you towards your goals, is enjoyable and fun. It doesn't need to be a chore. While you have to find something, it feels like a struggle long-term, it won't be sustainable.

What are some things that you already do that you could do while moving?

For example, stand, walk or pace around the room while you're:

  • talking on the phone

  • listening to podcasts

  • waiting for coffee to brew

  • working on the computer

Keep it flexible and creative.

And keep it reasonable.

There are limits to how much and how fast a body can adapt to more movement. Keep your adjustments incremental and within your body's sustainable growth capacity.

No matter what kind of movement you choose to do, make a commitment to a little bit more.

Gradually, incrementally, and intentionally, spend a little bit more time moving every day.
