Why not count calories

 

 

  • Counting calories makes most people feel deprived and restricted.

  • Counting calories doesn’t tell you about food quality.

  • Counting calories is inaccurate.

  • Counting calories is a pain in the arse.

  • Counting calories doesn’t focus on building habits.

 

 

Awareness beats calorie counting

If you’re aware, you’re in control.

Don’t forget:

(healthy) food consists of much more than just calories. More importantly, they provide us with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These also determine how full you feel after eating.

 

Awareness is the only real way to get healthy and fit for life.

However, there is one way that calorie-counting can sometimes be useful: for the building up of your awareness.

For instance, let’s say you record your calorie intake for the day. And then you test that intake against your awareness.

  • If you overate for your goals and what your body needs… were you aware of it?

  • If you ate too little for your goals and what your body needs… were you aware of it?

  • If you nailed “just right”, how did that feel? What physical cues told you that you got it?

Notice what changes you could make based on the info, and what body cues you might need to tune into.

This “info gathering” will come in handy no matter what your goals.

If you’re trying to lose fat, this will help you learn what “a little less” feels like physically.

 

What to do today

  1. Focus on getting the basics right, consistently.
    It’s not how much you know. It’s how much you do, consistently.

The fundamentals are, well, fundamental. Chop wood, carry water.

Experts use the same tools as novices. They use them better.

  1. Focus on appetite awareness.
    Purposely try a smaller portion, and observe what it feels like to eat less food. Then remember that feeling and use it as a guide
